The Yamaha Grizzly debuted in 2007 and hasn't stopped improving since. It's now a benchmark for enthusiasts after a rugged, dependable, and comfortable ATV.
The 2014 model builds on the success of its predecessors with significant upgrades to the engine and chassis. I got the opportunity to test ride a Grizzly 700 FI EPS SE at the Salon de l'agriculture et Expo-champs in St-Liboire, Quebec.
Refined package
While styling hasn't changed, the new 2014 Yamaha Grizzly 700 FI EPS SE features a sharp-looking matte black finish, and build quality elevates it among the top ATVs in the segment.
Refinement also characterizes the liquid-cooled, 686cc, single-cylinder engine, which gets a new forged piston, a revised cylinder head, a higher compression ratio (from 9.2:1 to 10:1), and a new Air Induction System that improves combustion efficiency. The result is 30% more fuel economy and a broader powerband (higher top speed).
Effective power delivery
Squeeze the throttle and the 2014 Yamaha Grizzly 700 FI EPS SE leaps forward like a tiger pounces on its prey. Much of the credit goes to the Ultramatic CVT, which uses a wet-sump, centrifugal clutch. Power then goes through a pair of drive pulleys linked by a belt that's always under tension. This unique setup definitely helps to clear obstacles, cross mud pools, and tow a trailer. It's also the first automatic transmission to feature true engine braking, thus boosting confidence in steep descents.
Riders can switch between 2WD and limited-slip 4WD thanks to Yamaha's excellent On-Command system. If the going gets even tougher, you can count on a fully locked differential 4WD mode to enjoy maximum traction.
Agile and comfortable
With 30mm longer front and rear upper and lower A-arms, the 2014 Yamaha Grizzly 700 FI EPS SE proves more stable overall while considerably reducing steering effort for longer, more comfortable trips on the trail.
I particularly liked the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system on my tester. In addition to limiting rider fatigue, it helps isolate the rider from external feedback from obstacles that come in contact with the front wheels -- so much so that you may not even feel the dangers coming. Be careful.
Let's go back to the suspension, which received further upgrades in the form of 5-way preload adjustable shocks. With a long-travel, super-compliant setup, the 2014 Yamaha Grizzly 700 FI EPS SE becomes the most comfortable ATV in its class. On the other hand, excessive pitch and roll greatly affect performance in aggressive riding.
Bottom line
While some of the improvements are barely noticeable, all of them come together to significantly enhance overall refinement. The Grizzly 700 FI remains a safe bet in the large-displacement ATV segment.
Pros
- Ultramatic CVT
- Class-leading comfort
- Great riding position
- Four-wheel disc brakes
Cons
- Excessive pitch and roll
